Welcome and Benvenuti to all my Lovely Followers around the World,
It’s a shame really. Italy’s Rugby team are getting a little better at the game every year, but a little is not enough. As English fans living in Italy, my man and I support both England and Italy and our hopes of victory in the Six Nations, still lie shakily with England. But to watch England pulverise Italy with a win of 57 – 14, was rather sad. Great that England have those extra points, but we would love to have seen the Italians put up a better fight. Hey ho, next time I guess. Image from the Guardian.
Anyway, on a much lighter note and what with all the fashion parades going on, I did spot this rather lovely outfit in La Repubblica. But, as I was about to take this foto at La Dispensa this morning, I was approached by a very sweet local Signora who loves to talk about her one and only visit to London a quarter of a century ago. So, I’m trying to take the foto for you, and she is pulling up a chair and kissing me on the cheek. She is about four-foot-ten so she did not think much of the outfit I was photographing. Anyway, I listened for at least ten minutes and understood about eighty percent, which is a way of helping with my language skills I guess. Eventually, she must have seen my eyes glass over, as she finally stood and went about her shopping. Bless her. Anyway, I finally got the foto!
Where was I? Ah, Sock Shoes. Now these seem to be the latest thing here in Italy. They look very comfortable, but methinks you need slim ankles or long legs and preferably both to set them off. But then I also feel the same way about the fad for trainers with everything. If you are short or dumpy, they are so unflattering! What do you think?
Back out there in the world of politics, which I have not talked about recently due to the confusing nature of everything, we are about to have the European elections. Now my man and I are allowed to vote, but what or whom do we vote for? Look at these two Joint Deputy Prime Ministers that make up the head of the coalition government. They are like a couple of cry baby siblings, with completely opposing views, no wonder things are all over the place! Listening to the rumblings over coffee at Fiano, there is a big desire to return to the Lira, which to me also smacks of wanting out of Europe. At least by watching the way the Brits are cocking things up, there will be a lesson learnt on how not to do it! Watch this space.
But enough of that, I saw this interview in the paper and whilst you may not recall her name, Giovanna Ralli, you will remember her beautiful face. This Italian actress was hugely popular in the 60’s and at the age of eighty-four, still looks stunning. There have been many Italian actresses who graced the cinematic screens over the years, more than you may realise. Giovanna made her first film in 1942 at the age of seven and her last one in 2013. She was nominated for numerous awards and was awarded the Golden Globe for her career in 1975. Recently asked if she would be making any more films she retorted I’m eighty, why not?
And, here is another thing of beauty and made in Italy, the new Ferrari F8! But what’s this, I here you say, they’ve painted it blue! Now I always thought Ferrari were traditionally red, but my man who knows about these things, says not. Anyway, methinks that whilst I need a new car it is too low slung for our dirt track roads, so perhaps not.
OK, time to get on with the day job, am a little late in posting this blog, sorry about that.
Have a great week and do contact me if you want a Rock Concert invite for June 21 here in Tuscany. Email june.finnigan@virgin.net Visit my website at my site
Salute June x

Just a short distance away and closer to us, Dominic Miller’s concert tour hit Empoli last night. Now Dominic has been around for years, a lesser known but brilliant guitarist who is best known for supporting Sting (our neighbour) on many world tours. I have only just spotted this in the paper, so too late for me to go, I am a little annoyed with ‘Bands in Town’ who are supposed to notify me of these events! But anyway, look out for Dominic’s new album being released on the 1st March called ‘Absinthe’. Visit
And what else is happening in Tuscany? I hear you ask. Well, whilst enjoying coffee in Fiano this morning, I discovered an article about The Orient Express. Now I never travelled on this rather intoxicating sounding train, I would have loved to mind. But this reminded me of a much more local steam train excursion which takes you through gorgeous Tuscan countryside stopping at towns and villages along the way. You can take a whole day out just indulging in the ride and stopping for events, festas and wine tastings. The train company is based in Siena and is called
Also in the newspaper, as in most papers around the world, it was addio to that unique fashion designer and celebrity, Karl Lagerfield. As you know, I follow Italian fashion closely, and whilst Karl was based in Paris and associated with Chanel, since the sixties he worked closely with Fendi and became a director of the company, which is based in Rome. Fendi dedicated it’s show in Milan last week to the great man. Well I had best get my orange handbag out again as it is obviously back in vogue!
And staying with the subject of fashion I couldn’t help but fall in love with another
Firstly, we were really delighted to see the arrival of a community Drinking Water Fountain/dispenser in Fiano, our local village. I am so very pleased because if this is happening in all the communities, then Italy is already making a massive leap towards reducing the plastic bottle problem. Tap water in Italy has always been a little suspect, so the demand for bottled water has been enormous. Now we can just refill our existing bottles with fresh still water absolutely free! In the picture is Milko demonstrating how to use a plastic card, which you can purchase from his Cartalibreria next to the Fountain, should you want the chilled or fizzy variety. The cost for these is only a few centesimi per litre. Brilliant! Foto J Finnigan.
Meanwhile, Fiano is gearing up for Il Calambur and the big annual dinner will be held in Piazza Gasparri this evening. This then marks the run-up to the Calambur contest itself, which will be held in Certaldo on Sunday 16th September. The contest involves the five teams of the Commune di Certaldo wearing medieval outfits, who compete to win the coveted banner. Fiano’s team is all in red and is called Le Fonti. The contest involves all kinds of races and intelligence tests. It’s all sooo exciting! Visit the website for lot’s of colourful pictures from last year.
Meanwhile, I spotted this gorgeous jacket in La Repubblica as I was enjoying my coffee in La Dispensa this morning. I know, I do go on a bit about fashion and particularly those modelled by happy models. And, yes, Luisa Spagnoli has done it again with a jacket you could wear smart or with jeans & T-shirt. OK, she is not cheap but in my view something like this is timeless and therefore a very good investment.
Oh dear, I nearly forgot! My man’s new Man Bag, which we purchased in Barbarino Val D’Elsa last Thursday, is really beautiful. Hand-made (fatto a mano) and it fits his apple lap-top perfectly. So he’ll be swanning around London posing in his hand-made shoes, bespoke suit and his new bag casually slung over his shoulder! Don’t you just love him? I do.

Well, I’m starting off today with the music scene, here in our lovely bit of Italy. I could write the whole blog and never leave this particular subject, as so much is going on musically. But worry ye not, there is much more to read about below. But I am sure you would want to know that the aging Bob Dylan will be gracing us with his presence on 7th April, appearing at The Nelson Mandela Forum in Florence. I was interested to read that last year he was made Poet Laureate for his song lyrics, unusual choice, but open to discussion. Foto Tour promotions. For details of all his Italian concert dates go to
Also touring during February and March is the hugely popular gravelly Italian singer, Zucchero. Zucchero translates to sugar, and a very sweet man he is too. His real name is Adelmo Fornaciari and is described as a blues artist who has sold more than sixty million records in his lifetime! At sixty-three he’s still going strong. Foto La Reppublica. Anyway, on a brighter note, I found this gorgeous Sodini handbag in La Reppublica’s weekend magazine. I think it is truly beautiful and it’s so nice to have a relaxed happy model in the picture. Oh, dear, I have just discovered that the brand can be bought in Certaldo, at Magnolia in Via Giugno. What to do? My man will kill me if I buy another handbag! I’ll have to find an excuse somehow! Visit
Just lately, I have been getting really put off the fashion shows as so many designers use these awful miserable looking models that don’t even seem to be enjoying the clothes they are wearing! Sorry, I just don’t understand it. They may as well just use remote-controlled robots, that would at least be more interesting.
This is also Silvio Berlusconi’s party, which is currently holding third place in the opinion poles. Posters are now appearing on the big metal boards erected a couple of weeks ago. Although we are residents here, we don’t appear to have voting rights. Mind you, I would not have a clue as to who to vote for, but then I felt the same way when we lived in England in the distant past! I’ll keep you posted. Foto La Nazione.

The Italians, being Italian, just adore the Festive Period. If you want to be anywhere in the world this time of year, you will love it here in Tuscany. All the main towns and cities are now up and running with Mercate di Natale, that’s Christmas Markets to you and me. These lovely ladies were in the nearby town of Empoli on 1st December, making sure that everyone knew what time of year it was! As if we could forget….. Foto La Nazione.
As I write this blog, I realise that I also need to get out there and start buying up all the goodies, after all, it’s only three weeks to go! Now, in case my family are reading this, handbags, scarves and books are at the top of my list…. Whilst even I read books on my Kindle, I still like to own real things. Foto La Repubblica.
Now, if you are likely to indulge in a little more Prossecco than normal, you should be aware that here in Italy, one may not be able to outrun the latest Polizia car, which is in fact a Ferrari! Yes, that’s what I said, a Ferrari. The drivers of the local less impressive Polizia vehicles are fast enough, and that’s both male and female; but put them in a Ferrari and god only knows what will happen on our narrow windy roads! foto La Repubblica
But enough of that, lets look at what is happening in the world of Music. Well, if you fancy a little romantic singing by a handsome, if getting on a bit, Italian crooner then you could book yourself a couple of tickets for Claudio Baglioni’s 2018 tour. Claudio has performed with many famous people, including Pavarotti, in recent years. He’s also a very good pianist. Go to
Meanwhile, my man and I decided to revisit Osteria La Gramola in Tavernelle, which we have not been to for over two years. It’s funny how one can forget how good a place is, and we were reminded by being served up a delicious bowl of pumpkin soup with gluten-free bread for me and stuffed vegetables with potatoes. My man had a mix of crostini with various veggie toppings, followed by spaghetti tossed in pepper and pecorino cheese. All absolutely yummy. I bought home a piece of their traditional Siena Cake, which has all the flavours of the traditional English Christmas cake, but is actually made of crushed figs, fruits and nuts. I can’t wait to eat it! Go to
Now I cannot go without sharing some of the gorgeous winter woollies and handbags currently available in Florence, my favourite shopping place. These can also be bought on-line, so don’t worry if you can’t get here this year. Snuggly Cashmere and woolly wrap around coats with matching bags, beautiful! Fotos La Reppublica.
Let’s start with a look the Classic Italian Beauty. Now I’ve always loved Sofia Loren and she still scrubs up really well in her eighties. But now we have Monica Bellucci, absolutely stunning at fifty-three and likely to be just like Sofia; going on forever. Different features, style and character, but still stunningly beautiful with an envious record of filming with some of the most gorgeous male leads. This morning, reading the papers over coffee in our local village of Fiano, I found two whole pages dedicated to Monica. Of course, one of the most recent well publicised encounters, was with Daniel Craig in ‘Spectre;’ phew. Foto La Repubblica
Now back in the real world; I must take you on a trip into the Tuscan countryside and remind you that it’s the season for Funghi, Castagne and Tartufi, that is Mushrooms, Chestnuts and Truffles to you and me. My man and I are already indulging in the Tartufi and Porcini Mushrooms and shortly we will be able to stuff ourselves with some of the classic deserts made with chestnuts. Now I have to say, nothing goes to waste in the Tuscan countryside, dishes are all seasonal and this means we have so much to look forward to throughout the year. Pumpkin sauce and pasta is now on the menu at Ristorante C’era una Volta, topped off with smoked ricotta cheese. Mmmm, can’t wait to go out to lunch, perhaps we will see you there!
Of course, I am never far from the Fashion pages and I thought you might like these designer pics in this week’s papers. A little classic black number, but with that bit of extra something, having been designed and made in Italy, and the lovely wrap around Autumn Warmers in my favourite shades. Fotos La Repubblica
And yes, we are having to wrap up a little warmer; evidence of this is the morning mist filling the valleys below us, as we open the curtains and shutters. Well, we had a delivery of logs last week and the brick floors in our monastery farmhouse are now feeling cooler. However, I do like to curl up in front of the fire with my gorgeous man, so that’s more to look forward to! Foto J Finnigan

I must tell you that lots of Contemporary Wine and Art Events are going on around us and I should mention those run by The Vitalita Cultural Association, a number of which we will be attending. The events include wine tasting, art exhibitions, live music and dance, in stunning locations. So this will keep the visitors occupied when it’s raining. Visit the English version
So what’s been happening on the political scene? Ah, not surprisingly, Matteo Renzi, having resigned as Prime Minister, has got himself elected back in as leader of the PD party. Of course, he’s one of those pretty boys of politics and used to be the mayor of Florence. The girlies love him, just like they adored Silvio Berlusconi who is eighty now, but still attracts a big following! So Matteo could be running the country again by the end of the year!
What else, oh yes, I have to share this picture with you. The Italian shoe designers have mastered the elegant flat shoe look and I just love these, and the handbag of course.
And finally, for now, here is ‘man and dog’ of the month. Only Gucci can come up with such a beautiful picture. What is your favourite fashion brand?
