Carnival time in Certaldo. Photo La Nazione

Carnival time in Certaldo.
Photo La Nazione

This last week has been all about the annual celebrations in Certaldo called the Mercantia,  when the usually quiet relaxed town  goes a little crazy having a sort of carnival for five days.  The festivities start around six in the evening and stands selling everything imaginable line the streets and Piazzas.  Certaldo Alto is the most popular, especially with tourists, as there are parades of locals in the most amazing costumes and performing artists.  The downside is that it is impossible to park close by and people have to trudge at least half a mile into the centre.   However, the locals seem to automatically go with the flow.  Even our favourite coffee bar, Il Solferino, had a covered area outside selling ice-cream, filled Panini and wine, of course.

So, apart from the heat, the main subject at Laura’s Bar/alimentare has been the Mercantia.  “Have you been” or “Are you going?” or “Did you see that amazing….” all in Italian of course.  Meanwhile life carrys on as normal for we country folk and the villagers in Fiano.  Spotted earlier in the week was a little dog out shopping at Laura’s and lots of short skirts (it doesn’t matter if you are over eighty here).

But the weather has been torturous.  The heat only relents a little after seven in the evening, so that’s when we go outside, covered in mosquito protection, to enjoy an aperitivo.  The poor tourists, many of whom stay in self-catering villas, have discovered that many do not have air-conditioning or mosquito curtains and it is very important to be able to throw the windows open overnight to let the cooler air in.  So, be warned, bring mosquito protection, check if your villa is air-conditioned or at least has fans and mosquito curtains!

On a happier note, the garden has been attracting some fascinating insects.  If anyone can name them we would be very keen to hear from you.  Probably members of some grasshopping/cricket type family?  Also difficult to photograph are the articulated bees and gorgeous humming-bird type bees, however, we’ll try to get a picture or two for you.

Well, it is Sunday Morning, another very hot day, however, I must put a couple of hours writing in and complete another chapter of ‘The Italian Connection’.   I have pasted a snippet below to give you a taste.

So, may I wish you all a great week and if you are outside of Tuscany, hopefully you will enjoy cooler weather!  We’ll catch up with Silvio Berlusconi next week!

Salute June x

Extract from ‘The Italian Connection’ currently in progress:

I turned slowly and looked up into the chocolate-brown eyes of Laurent DuPont. “Was that you jogging through the garden earlier?” I smiled, acting as if we were meeting for the first time. We shook hands. “Oui, you were watching me then, or more likely my tight bottom and rippling muscles.” I nodded. “Yes, I am English and you are French I think?” I said rather more loudly as Roberto approached from behind Laurent. “Ah, bene, you have found someone to talk to.” He smiled. “Yes, this very nice Frenchman, what did you say your name was?” I looked wide-eyed at Laurent. “Jean-Paul Gautier, at your service.” He took my hand and lifted it to his lips.

How to stay cool?  That is the question on everyone’s sun-dried lips as we take coffee accompanied by chilled fizzy water in Fiano?  It’s getting even hotter here and is expected to be up in the forties by the end of the week.  Farty Barty the cat has worked out a clever system to match the height and the angle of the sun, gradually moving around the garden and falling asleep again.  By lunchtime he has been stretched out on the outside table for at least three hours.  The table is shaded by a brolly which in turn is shaded by some ancient cypress trees, and the air flows up through the latticed surface.  Purrfect.  Watering the garden is now a daily chore and despite the heat and lack of rain, the upper terrace is looking lovely.  The Bougainvillea is as beautiful as last year and the

potted Hydrangea have been heavy with flowers.   There are lots of fascinating insects too, and I don’t mean the Zanzari (mosquitos), we could do without those!  We are also getting a great show from the birds, Bee-eaters, Jays and Hoopies, all brightly coloured and with birdsong so typical of this area.  We just love it.

Meanwhile, I have a few moments of sadness, while I take coffee in Certaldo with the gorgeous Omar Sharif for the last time.  He has gone to join all those other twinkling movie stars in the sky.  How many times did you go and see Dr Zivago?  I lost count after ten times.  I cried buckets every time poor Omar hammered on the inside of the moving tram’s window, but Lara kept walking and did not see him. Oh god, I’ve got a lump in my throat just thinking about it!  And the wonderful dark arab character in Lawrence of Arabia, sigh….  So addio Omar, you will not be forgotten.

But on a brighter note, Tuscany has been rocking to the sound of  Jovanotti, the Italian singer adored by the Italians and more besides.  Our beautiful daughter and granddaughter went to his concert and had a fabulous time and came back with the t-shirts.   Apparently, forty thousand fans turned up!

July is awash with music festivals at Lucca, Pistoia and Florence.  Great acts currently include Sting and Mumford & Sons.  The 60’s Romantic Italian singer Don Backy is also touring again at the age of seventy-four – rock on that man!

On a quieter note, I am planning to skip cooking tomorrow and take my man back to Il Castello in Certaldo Alto for lunch.  The food is excellent and they have a lovely shady terrace.  One needs calming moments during a hot hardworking week.  And on the subject of food, I had best go and check out what we can put together for lunch.  On the other hand, I think a long glass of Pinot Grigio first and then perhaps some ideas for lunch might come easier!  I know, I’m such a terrible glutton for good wine and other people’s cooking; our grandchildren call us the ‘Cafe People’!

Have a really great week, stay cool and do drop me a line.  Salute June x

Wow, where does one start with this blog.  What a fabulous fortnight of Rocking, seeing lovely friends again and simply having the best possible time.  The food and wine flowed endlessly, and my man, who was the star of the whole period, calmly accepted that he had to share our little villa with five girlies for five days!  I was incredibly pleased to have my old Grammar School friend Penny from Australia staying.  We had not seen each other for fifty years, yes really!  I know you can’t believe I’m old enough, neither can I!

You will notice that I have updated the banner at the top of the page with the band group hug taken on 20th June.  The guys were absolutely brilliant and we had a really good stand in drummer as Mario was involved with a family event.  Family events take presidence over anything else here in Italy, and my beautiful daughter and granddaughter quite naturally came to my bash.  This part of Tuscany is alive with music events this time of year, so I must say a big thank you to all those lovely people who supported my event despite the competition elsewhere.  I decided to go all Rock Chick black this year and at the last moment threw a scarf around my neck.  If anyone else mentions the Vicar of Dibley, I’ll throttle them!

I took the girlies up to Certaldo Alto on the Monday and they spent a couple of hours ‘ahing and ooing’.  Certaldo Alto is the historic centre of Certaldo up on a hill, which is reached by a funiculare train and was packed with tourists!  We had a fantastic time, however, we ended up exhausted and flopped down at a table in the garden terrace of Il Castello http://www.albergoilcastello.it and were forced to eat the most delicious lunch.  I am taking my man there on Thursday and despite only living fifteen minutes away, we have never eaten there before!  It’s another one to add to our list of places to eat.

On 23rd June my lovely English friend Hilary and I had a joint birthday celebration, opening our presents at Bar Solferino in Certaldo over morning coffee.  Thank you to the adorable Hilary for your amazing ability to whisk the washing up away without our realising it and spoiling us rotten!  Also to our new friend Rose from Australia, who made the most delicious pear crumble, which my man is still waxing lyrical about.  Our house guests were the best we could ever hope for and not to forget my beautiful sister-in-law who did all the summer plant pots before the concert.  Thank you everyone and I will miss you terribly.

Well, it’s already Tuesday and I really must get this blog off to you.  I will update you on Silvio’s activities next weekend.

Have a great week, do drop me a line and don’t forget to visit my books on Amazon.

I must apologise as I am having to make this a quickie.  What?  You thought I meant something a bit naughty didn’t you?  Ha ha, I got your attention though didn’t I?  Or perhaps it was the mention of my man’s legs…… No, it’s just that I have had such a hectic week and weekend that I could not make sufficient time to organise my usual lengthy blog.  But I did want to make contact with you before we were too far into the working week.

Last night I spent several hours with the Rock Chick Band rehearsing our next concert.  We will get together next Monday too for a final burst.  Then it will be the real thing on Saturday the 20th June!  Can’t wait.  If you are in Tuscany and would like an invite, write to june.finnigan@virgin.net

So, I am sending you our week in pictures, with captions for you to enjoy.

“What do you think it is?”  My man is pointing to a lovely white lily type flower that has appeared out of nowhere in the bank below the upper terrace.  “Mmm,” I scratch my chin.  “It must have seeded itself, it looks like  some kind of lily…”  I am hopeless at plant names, but our daughter would come to the rescue the next day when she arrived for lunch with the family.  “It has more than one name” she says,

The 'Bottle Brush' shrub. Photo P Finnigan

The ‘Bottle Brush’ shrub.
Photo P Finnigan

“But the most popular one is Madonna Lily.  It’s normally planted on the grave of someone who got murdered by mistake; as a sort of apology!”   Our knowledgable girl has a first in horticulture, so she should know.  Popular plant in Mafiosi gardens then, I muse.  But the other plant we were curious about was a gorgeous red bloom on a shrub that had not flowered before.  “Well, I call it the Bottle Brush,” she said.  “but that’s not its real name.  I’ll send you an email when I remember it.”

The countryside is currently a sea of red poppies and the fireflies are flitting around in the evenings; I love this time of year.  The next three days will be all celebrations and our italian friends will be taking time out for eating al fresco in their allotments, on balconies, in fields and gardens.  Festa della Republica is on Tuesday, so is a public holiday.  However, the Italians always start preparations two or three days earlier and then extend it for a couple of days after that.  We have had to book our usual table for sunday pranzo (lunch) at C’era Una Volta well in advance, as the ristorante will most likely be heaving.

My man returned from a dash to London last Friday, and we popped up the C’era Una Volta for Cena (dinner).  We were delighted to have Martina join us.  She is Gianluca’s longterm girlfriend, hugely intelligent and a linguist, so her English is really good.  To remind you, Gianluca is our favourite waiter and eternal student of history.  He has just been offered a PhD in Istanbul, but he has decided not to follow it through as it would mean leaving certain commitments behind, like the restaurant and, although he would not admit to it, the lovely Martina.  I gave her two copies of my books, signed of course, to share with Gianluca.

This morning we are scouring the papers in Caffe Bar Solferino in Certaldo, and are highly amused to read that the gorgeous Silvio Berlusconi turned up at the wrong rally on his hustings tour yesterday!  He was supposed to be joining the representative of his own party, Forza Italia, to give him support.  But whoops, he found himself appearing to support the opposition instead!  Still, he kept a brave smile on his face…

Well, time to go and make myself beautiful as we must get to the ristorante early before the crowds arrive.  We are used to the ‘slow food’ service in Italy, and actually quite like it, it allows time for conversation in between courses.  However, on Festa weekends when big extended families turn up, as well as the tourists, it pays to get one’s order in early.

“You didn’t see those two guys come in, did you?” My man looks at me with his deep blue eyes and I melt.  “Err, which two guys?” I say, trying to concentrate on something other than his handsome face.  “The two wearing camouflage outfits, you can’t see them can you? – ha ha!”  He roars.  I smile and shake my head.  He is in good fettle this Sunday morning at Laura’s Alimentare/Bar in Fiano, as we sip our delicious espresso and he enjoys a marmalade pastry.  This is a lot to do with the fact that the sun has finally come out after days of cold and rain.  Can you believe it, we actually lit a log fire last night!  “What would you like me to do in the garden today?”  He sighs like a contented cat, stretching back in his chair.  “Oh, you know, pruning the roses and dead flowers, planting those plants I got in the market yesterday, hoeing and weeding the rose beds….”  “OK, I get it, just about everything then?”  He grins and I smile back.

Back in my studio I sit down to write this blog and reflect on the last few days.  I have been getting down to singing practice late morning every day this week, despite the lungs still being a bit raspy after the flu.  It’s now only twenty-seven days to the Fifth Annual Rock Concert which we hold every June in our Tuscan garden.  I must say, I am really looking forward to it and just love being behind the microphone.  I am also very excited to be seeing old friends again!   There will be a lot of celebrating, so we are stocking up the wine cellar!  If you are in Tuscany on 20th June and would like an invite to the concert party, send your email address to june.finnigan@virgin.net.  We would love to see you there.

I am well into writing my current novel ‘The Italian Connection’ and have been chuckling over a couple of the scenes I have just written.  Let me just say, that Joanna Wilde has a new role to play and is currently at ‘The Castello’, a beautiful historic castle in Tuscany.  Here is a little exert…..’I smiled and lifted out my favourite handgun. “It’s a Beretta 70, good little shooter, favoured by the James Bond girlies I believe,” Dominic’s voice echoed in my head.  Feeling the weight of it in my right hand, I checked the mechanism, which was as smooth as silk.  Then crouching, I held it with both hands in front of the long mirror. I felt a rush of pure adrenalin. Under the first layer of the box I found the thigh holster I favoured and a supply of ammunition. I loaded the gun and made sure the safety catch was on.  I placed it in the holster and strapped it to my inner thigh. It felt good.’

Well, back in the real world, I read that our gorgeous Silvio Berlusconi has reached Napoli on his hustings tour.  Of course he will have plenty of friends there too, of a certain kind, and has met up with Alessandra Mussolini, yes descendant of you know who, and the Governatore uscente della Campania, Stefano Caldoro.  SB’s popularity remains undiminished and it will be an interesting time ahead.

Ah, whats this?  Farty Barty the cat has found his way up to the studio and is meowing at me.  Now, he is restricted to the kitchen when in the house, after a couple of whoopsee accidents, so there must be a door open somewhere.  I’d best go down with him and investigate.  So, I think I will love you and leave you at this point and wish you all a fantastic week.  I will think of you when we enjoy a little drink or three in the garden this evening.

Benvenuti to all my Loyal and New Followers,

Yes, the dust has settled.  After my new book launch I have finally allowed myself a couple of days to relax, despite my being inspired to write another chapter of ‘The Italian Connection.’

It is still a little chilly but finally we are having some lovely sunny weather.  This is important, not just for our own state of mind, but also for the tourists that have started to arrive in droves.  “The car in front is a hire car.”  My man announces as we follow a Sunday driver back from Certaldo this morning.  “I really don’t know how you can tell the difference between a hire car and a normal one!”  I say.  “Well its a combination of no local garage sticker on the back, the number plate and the way they are driving.”  Said the Wiseman.  “Oh, silly me” I mumble, “I should have realised.”  “Have you noticed how we have personally influenced the local Italians with our Honda CRV?” He continued.  “After we bought this car, lots of others started to appear on the local roads.  In fact, we have always been influencers.  When we lived in England we were the first people in the West Country to buy a Ford Escort Cabriolet and then the Limited Edition Wrangler Jeep.  In no time at all, other people were copying us and doing the same.”  Once again I am amazed at how observant my man was, and is, regarding cars.  “Do you know, it had never occurred to me!”  I smiled encouragingly.  Don’t you just love the man?  I do.

Earlier, we had enjoyed coffee at Bar Solferino in Certaldo where the caffè Latte is so good, I had two.  Idling my way through the local Nazione  newspaper, my attention is quite naturally drawn to a picture of several Italian men standing in the street with their trousers dropped around their ankles.  Is this a brazen way of showing all the girlie tourists whats on offer?  No it is a protest by Bar Owners, against the high taxes they are having to pay for running their bars and caffes!  Well, this is sad news of course and I don’t want to belittle the cause, but I will be very happy to see many more protests of this nature!

Meanwhile, back in our lovely garden we are enjoying the smell of cut grass and the first blooms of Wisteria and Jasmin.  It gives one such a lift, after a rather drawn out winter.  You may remember that my lovely sister-in-law came to stay a couple of weeks ago and did all the Spring potting.  The pots are now overflowing with flowers and the bees are buzzing; it all looks amazing.  Oh yes, not to forget the arrival of the first Cuckoo, Hoopies, Swallows, Swallowtail Butterflies and Pippestrello Bats!

I am realising that my Rock Concert is now only a couple of months away, so its important to do the voice exercises every day.  Yesterday, I was once again brainwashing myself with the lyrics to ‘RadioActive’ and singing along to it.  “You need to go longer on the ‘died’ and the ‘bones.” My man said helpfully. “This is a new song in my repertoire” I say, “so I have a lot more practising to do.”    “Ah.” He says.  As I write this blog, I can hear David Bowie blasting out from the speakers in the kitchen.   I am itching to get back behind the microphone.

Silvio's difficult goodbye to AC Milan. Nazione Newspaper

Back in the land of the filthy rich, I can see that Italy is about to be overrun by wealthy Chinese.  Well, if the likely purchase of Silvio Berlusconi’s football club, AC Milan, is anything to go by.  The candidates for the acquisition are currently three Chinese, a Thailandia and a Swiss/Austrian.  Every time I see TV cameras at a football match, concert or other gathering of people, up pops several Chinese faces!  Now, I don’t think I am imagining things, but I am sure that there is a clever invasion going on, which is arriving on flying carpets made of Yuan Renminbi notes.

Well, enough of that.  Time to make myself beautiful and go off to Montespertoli for a passeggiata with my man and a cocktail, before lunch at ‘C’era una Volta’ Trattoria in Lucardo.

Have a great week and see you next time.

So there we were, in Montespertoli for the first time in six months, enjoying an aperitivo in the piazza in glorious sunshine and watching the world go by.  Then the churchgoers started to parade past us and we realised that it must be Palm Sunday, because everyone was carrying an olive branch.  Either that, or there had been a mass raid of the local olive groves to take cuttings for new planting.  Well of course it was the former, however, I have to say that a number of olive groves have been devastated by bugs and have been dug up and burnt.  So it would not surprise me if some of these branches were not taken home and stuck into rooting compost.

I know that a lot of you girlies out there are keen on Italian men, so when I saw this picture in a magazine in the bar, I thought I would share it with you.  There is nothing like sharing my morning coffee with a hunky Armani man (of course my own Englishman is just as gorgeous), but then I saw this Perofil man and knew you would love it.  However, unless you find very good vintage, I think it is important for you to realise that Italian men do deteriorate over the years.  However, whilst the old boys may lose their looks, they never lose their charm!

Now it has been a busy week, what with my lovely sister-in-law ( mia cognata) arriving to do the spring pots and therefore a visit to the garden centre in Poggibonsi was necessary.  Wednesday and Thursday were damp and miserable, so the planting on the terraces only really got going on the Friday.  So mia cognata and I were forced to go out to lunch at C’era Una Volta, or Paolo’s, as we affectionately call the restaurant.  Paolo has been making his yummy leek and potato soup, especially as he knows how much I like it.  We also went back on Friday evening when my man returned from London.  He had arrived earlier at the station with our fourteen year old grandson, who is back from Blundells for a three-week Easter school holiday.  So we had a jolly gathering at the Jazz Caffe in Certaldo for cocktails, before the grandson went home with our daughter who lives near Volterra.

Saturday was hectic, with lunch at our daughter’s farmhouse,  then an evening with our lovely Bavarian friends and the Australian couple who had bought our old rented home across the valley at La Selva.  I won’t tell you the whole story, but due to the good company, wine and loud music, we ended up dancing around pretending to be Mick Jagger and various other guitar playing rockers.  I know, I can hear you saying, so what’s new!  Talking about rocking, I am being very good and exercising the voice every day, well most days!  Time is rushing by and my next Rock Concert will be here before we know it!  If you will be in Tuscany on the 20th June, and would like an invite, send your email address to june.finnigan@virgin.net.

Back in the garden, the flowering pots on the terrace were looking fabulous.  I expected to take some pictures in bright sunshine this morning, however, its clouded over again!  But despite that, the light has turned out to be quite good so here is a taste of the beautiful displays created by mia Cognata, who is such a star.  Meanwhile, back at caffè Bar Solferino in Certaldo, she enjoys a much deserved coffee in front of the amazing giant Easter eggs that are on display there.

Well, I really must get on with the final proof reading of ‘The Bolivian Connection’ as I know you are all itching to read it.  I have a couple of issues with the publisher, however, I expect to notify you of it being ready and on sale in the next couple of days.

Wishing you all a fabulous week from Tuscany.

We had a nice surprise last Friday, when we were asked to have our granddaughter for the night on account of her parents going out to a test dinner at Borgo San Pietro, which has a new A la carte chef.  Meanwhile, we had beans on cheese on toast and thoroughly enjoyed it.  Yes, we can get baked beans locally, not the Heinz variety, but as good as.  Before supper, Granddad walked our lovely granddaughter up to the church, which is sadly out of use, but has a big family of cats.  They took cat biscuits and were not too surprised to find a number of Farty Barty look alikes.  Farty Barty, for those that haven’t been introduced, is our resident wild male cat.  We are the family he has adopted to feed him when he choses to call in, and provide a cosy kitchen chair and indoor toilet if its raining.  After supper we were cosied up on the sofa and the granddaughter said, “Granny, do you have your tablet?” “I only take one in the morning now.” I smiled.  “No June, she means Ipad.” My man explained.  “There’s nothing wrong with my eyes!” I said, somewhat surprised.  “No Granny, you know, your electronic Ipad.”  “Oh, you mean my Kindle.  It’s next to the bed where I keep my tablets.”  They both roared out laughing.  What is it with this world, bring back the Queen’s English I say.

Back at Laura’s cafe bar/alimentare, we are enjoying morning coffee and reading the papers, as one does.  A week ago Tuscany was enjoying La Festa del Cioccolato.  Yes, you’ve guessed it the festival of chocolate.  Such is the enthusiasm for the sweet that Siena filled the Piazza del Campo with hundreds of stands selling variations of the theme and a train carriage travelled across the area stopping at stations where chocolate fans could board for a shopping extravaganza!

Meanwhile, the Six Nations Rugby was gripping the country, well at least part of it.  Calcio (football) is the most popular game in Italy.  If we were not cheering on Italy we were rooting for England, the former sadly ending up fifth after the final matches on Saturday.  The score for Italy versus Wales was terrible at 61 to 20!  ‘La disfatta means ‘The rout’ and it certainly was.  We desperately need some investment into the facilities and support for the game in Italy.

But now for some good news.  Spring is springing.  Lovely blue skies, trees in blossom, spring flowers everywhere and, we will be taking off all the protective covers in just a few days time.

I’m really looking forward to my beautiful sister-in-law’s arrival on Wednesday, as she is coming over from England to do all the spring pots.  By the weekend the terraces will look wonderful, so I will send you some pictures next time.  The other thing she has offered to do is catalogue my huge collection of steam train books and videos.  I inherited these from my great-uncle as he was a great steam enthusiast, like me.  However, It is time to think about letting these go to another enthusiast, otherwise they will just stay in boxes for another ten years.  I’ll let you know when the list is complete and if you have anyone who might like to make an offer for them, drop me a line at june.finnigan@virgin.net.

No time to report on Silvio B this time, but watch this space.

OK, I must crack on with the day job, after I’ve been out for my morning coffee that is.

Have a really great week.
