Welcome and Benvenuti to all my lovely Friends and Followers

As you know, I always like to bring you fun stories and nice things about our lovely little bit of the Chianti Hills, also snippits of what I have read in the local and sometimes national news.   So I will get the not so nice news out-of-the-way very quickly.

Tuesday, our bit of heaven was hit by a 3.9 earthquake.  There was a massive bang under the house and things started to rock, so being prepared for anything I got outside grabbing my disaster bag on the way.  We deliberately park our car away from the house, so I got inside and waited.  Now it probably only lasted a couple of minutes, but seemed an awful lot longer.  But we were very lucky, no damage at all, so the house has proved pretty resilient.  Not so lucky were the inhabitants in the Perugia area in Umbria, who suffered a much worse earthquake a couple of days later.  Then Wednesday, along came the hurricane winds and heavy iced rain.  This went on for more than three hours taking out trees and causing flooding & landslides.  My route to Fiano was blocked by a landslide on Thursday morning so I turned around and headed for Certaldo for my morning coffee.  Since then, the weather has been glorious, sunshine and cool fresh air.  Hard to believe it really happened!

So back to the nicer things in life.  The countryside is looking and smelling absolutely gorgeous, what with all the rain and now the warm sunshine.  Yesterday we managed to sit outside and enjoy an aperitivo before lunch, bathed in sunshine.  The valley below us has shed much of its leaves, however, and beautiful bare Silver Birch trees glow white against the remaining autumnal colour.  The vineyard below our front gate, now harvested, is glowing with striped colours, representing the different grape varieties to be found in each vineyard.  One can never get tired of Autumn in Chianti.

Now we can reach Fiano again, and over coffee I read a really interesting article about Little Wine Windows, or rather I Finestrini del Vino.  Everything sounds so much better in Italian, don’t you think?  Now these little windows are what remains of the way the Florentines sold their personal wine production direct to the public over the last few centuries.  Imagine, you tap the little window, pay your centesimo di lira and out comes a hand with a glass or jug of wine!  I just love this idea and these little windows are all over Florence.  Now there is a new society, which is dedicated to preserving them and for your further interest you must visit their website which can be read in Italian, English or German!  Go to http://www.buchettedelvino.org  It’s a truly fascinating story.

And what about the music scene, you ask?  Well, our latest touring band is ‘Radiohead’.  You know that alternative rock band at the height of their fame during the early 90’s.  An adventurous band, which incorporated electronic elements into their music, one of their classic songs being ‘Climbing Up The Walls.’

What else?  Oh yes, I must show you this picture.  It’s an advertisement for shoes, but I just love the whole outfit!  Despite the fact that I buy leather shoes and boots, I can’t quite bring myself to wrap myself in leather.  So a leather look outfit like this suits me fine.  Even my black biker jacket is faux!

But enough of that, time to get this blog off to you and to join my gorgeous man for an aperitivo.  Life eeeez good, life eeeez now.

Before I launch into the subjects in the above title, I do want to let you know that I have not forgotten to mention the Olive Harvest.  Yes it is in full swing, however, I will talk about it next week when I have some more fotos!

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, or should I say at our former monastery/farmhouse here in Chianti, it was time to try out our inglenook fireplace for the first time.  Now we do have a vast experience of open fireplaces, in fact my man actually built one many years ago in Somerset, England, so we knew there was only a 50/50 chance of it not smoking the sitting room out.  So, on Friday we got it lit and yes, as you can see in the foto we had to open the french windows to let the billowing smoke out.  But for just a few minutes it looked beautiful and when it was roaring the smoke went up the chimney, but as soon as it died down a bit, out came the smoke again!  So we will get an expert in to decide how to deal with it.  Watch this space….

Back in Fiano, where we mostly go for our coffee these days, I see in the Sunday magazine that very popular British musician Sting, or Gordon Sumner, is looking pretty good at sixty-five.  The Italians love Sting, and as he has a villa a few valleys away from us, he is also considered a local celebrity; a bit like me in fact, although I’m only famous in Fiano!

The other thing that the Italian’s love is Calcio or football to you and I.  You may remember that AC Milan was purchased by a Chinese buyer a short while ago.  Now I don’t know what to think of this, but in the paper I see the Chinese Premier Xi Jinping  showing off his skills by playing football without his hands or feet!  Methinks it’s a clever conjuring trick.  What was that you said?  Well, really…..

OK, where was I.  Oh yes, back to yesterday morning and the fruit and veg market.  Whilst, most of the peaches have finished I did find some plums and I bought some lovely fresh broccoli too.  I decided to take a foto of one of my favourite home-grown stands and I think this picture says it all.

Then of course, it’s that time of year for Chestnuts or Castagne as they are called here.  The Italians really go to town making wonderful deserts for this versatile nut, I’ll try to get some fotos for you next time.

My Pasta vegetarina. Foto J Finnigan

My Pasta vegetariana. Foto J Finnigan

And just for a bit of fun, here is a foto of my pasta vegetariana, which I had for supper last night with our lovely family, at a restaurant called Il Merlo, somewhere between Volterra and San Gimignano!  The chef has a sense of humour and obviously so disapproved of my not wanting any sausage with my pasta, he even removed the pumpkin as he thought I might consider it meat, then put this little face in the corner of the plate!  Very Ha Ha, I don’t think.

Anyway, gosh is that the time, I must crack on with my soon to be finished novel ‘The Italian Connection’, which some of you are asking about. My deadline for the first draft is the end of October, which I expect to meet, then another month of infill and editing before I can get it published.  Sorry to say, I won’t make the Christmas shelves but you can happily look forward to a Spring launch at the very latest.

OK, off you go, have a really good week and do drop me a line, I love to hear from you.

I have just returned from a few days in England, which I won’t bore you with as I know you only tune in to read about Tuscany.  However,  the reason I went, was to celebrate my lovely mother-in-law’s 91st birthday and I’m sure you won’t mind my giving her a mention.  Her name is Marie, Mabel, Olga, Romance and she is a real star.  So here is a picture for the world to see.   Just before this foto was taken she was singing ‘why are we waiting’.  And, in this shot she is making a deep growling sound!  On the flight home I was so tired I tipped my plastic cup of prosecco over the sleeping young man next to me.  “Oh no!” He proclaimed, “Did I knock your arm when I was asleep?” I smiled sweetly and told him not to worry.  I know that was naughty, but he was taking up a lot of room!

On a more serious note and lest we forget, I know you won’t mind me bringing back the subject of the recent earthquake that killed three hundred people and completely destroyed whole villages.  Many of you asked where and how you could make a contribution and I now have bank details for you to make a donation.  This was printed in La Nazione newspaper.  The rebuild cost will be a horrendous 300 million euros, and around 189 million has been raised so far.  So if you feel you can donate anything, the surviving villagers will be forever grateful.  Grazie Mille!

Now on to brighter things and the world of music.  The latest tour in our region is Depeche Mode, still rocking and sounding great.  Less of my cup of tea is Michael Buble, but I know he has a huge following.  Earlier this year, I wrote some lyrics for a song, which was recorded by a musician friend.  He hopes to sell the song to Michael’s agency, so maybe we can pin his manager down whilst he is in Tuscany!  Watch this space.

Meanwhile, back home in our beautiful bit of countryside on the edge of Chianti, we set out for coffee this morning in a thick mist.  So we drove higher to Fiano, which proved to be a good idea as we emerged into glorious sunshine.  At La Dispensa, our now regular choice of coffee bar, we were served at the table by the local butcher.  Yes, it’s true, but then he is also the owner of the bar/grocery shop/butchers along with his lovely wife.  It was very busy and full of shooters, whose company is not our first choice.  But we managed to grab the papers and hog them for a while, so that was OK.

On our return home we found lots of cobwebs on our gate in the mist; it’s that time of year and in the garden the autumn colours were looking great with lots of still flowering pots including the beautiful Hibiscus.  My man and I are relishing being home together for a whole week, enjoying the bars, restaurants and Autumn garden.  We will be getting a big fire basket and fireguard  for our inglenook fireplace this week, so I’ll let you know how we get on with lighting the wood fire for the first time, in this fabulous old farmhouse.

Back to today and we are off to Ristorante Borgo Antico in Tavernelle for lunch, which I am really looking forward to.  http://www.borgoanticorestaurant.com  Ah, life eeeez good, life eeeez now!

Have a fabulous week and do drop me a line.

So, to cheer us all up during this awful cold wet weather, I’m going to talk about that wonderful world of Italian Fashion.  However, it’s the Men’s and children’s’ fashion that has caught my eye in the papers this last week.  In Florence Gutteridge celebrated the opening of their new Menswear shop in Piazza Della Signoria. Filled with beautiful top quality Italian designs and is also available for you to visit on-line.  The model in the picture is pretty lush too!

The moment Italian children first see themselves in the mirror, they start getting fashion conscious.  Yes, the girlies do tend to be dressing much older than their years here, and black is a popular colour from a very young age.

But they do look great, particularly during the early evenings when they are out walking doing the ‘passeggiata’ with their friends and family.

Now, last Thursday we were up in Fiano reading the papers over coffee in La Dispensa when I spotted this article about La Mia Danza Libera, which roughly translates to My Free Dance.  Performing at that event was and will be the incredibly gorgeous Roberto Bolle who at forty-one could knock the socks off some of his younger dancing colleagues.  so for you girlies and some of you guys, here is his amazing foto.  The event is being shown on television at Rai-uno (Rai 1).  Look out for it!

Meanwhile, back in Florence The beautiful historic church Santa Maria Novello attracted five thousand visitors on its open day last week, looking to raise funds for more restoration and upkeep.  Originally funded by Florence’s wealthy elite, it is now in need of further support.  for the best description of this amazing Dominican church, its art and museum collection go to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santa_Maria_Novella

Now here’s a thing.  I have just read an article about a Caravaggio painting that appears to be exhibited in both London and Florence.  According to Vittorio Sgarbi, a respected expert, the one in Florence is a copy!  Oh no, we say, so the National Gallery in London, England has the real one!  Called the Ragazzo (boy) it is a painting we all know quite well, but can you tell the difference?  I think that some of these fakes are so good they should remain on show and declared as being a copy, rather than take it down.  But what do you think?

OK, I must start thinking about my trip to England this week and getting this blog off to you.  Have a really great week and do visit my author site at http://www.amazon.com/author/junefinnigan, Oh and don’t forget to write!

Silvio celebrates his 80th!

Now the big news last week was the 80th birthday celebration of the charismatic ex-politician Silvio Berlusconi.  He spent the day with his thirty-one year old partner (gosh she’s getting on a bit) Francesca Pascale and his family, in his mansion near Milan.  He was quoted as having announced that his political career is effectively over and “I will dedicate more time to the people I love and that is the way it should be: five children and ten grandchildren have turned me into a patriarch”  he said at an interview on the big day.  Ah bless his silk socks.  But if this means his retiring from the world of politics completely, then things will be far less colourful in that arena.  I read that two out of three members want him back as the leader of Forza Italia; watch this space!

Back in our beautiful bit of Chianti countryside, we have taken to popping outside the front door with a couple of chairs for an aperitivo before lunch, because there is some shade there at that time of day.  You will remember that our current home is guarded at the front gate by a huge ancient oak tree (querceto) and last weekend I had the strangest feeling that I was being stared at.  I looked at the tree and it had suddenly taken on the face of a moose!  Yes, I know I was on the second glass of wine, but here is the proof!  If you cannot see what I can see then perhaps I should make an appointment to go and see my lovely doctor Flavio.  Please tell me you can see it’s face….

Anyway, to change the subject and taking you back to La Dispensa caffee bar in Fiano, I was reading the paper over my morning coffee and saw these beautiful Gucci shoes advertised.  The orange pair in the middle exactly matches my current handbag.  What do you think?  Would it be over indulgent on my part, to buy these on-line?

Also in the paper I read that this is the last month to view Leonardo Da Vinci’s exhibition of ‘Le Macchine Militaria’ (I don’t think this needs translating) at the Museum of Torture in San Gimignano.  Apparently, it’s a ‘multi-media exhibition’ whatever that is!  Should I go and see it?  I’m not sure and I have heard that a lot of the exhibits are pretty gruesome.

By the way, we have house guests for a few days and whilst I continue to work and write it’s good to have some girlie time, with my sister-in-law who accompanied a lovely friend of mine from England.  Today we went out to lunch at Borgo Antico in Tavernelle http://www.borgoanticorestaurant.com after I tried in vain to buy a new travel case in the high street and found most of the shops closed; I had forgotten it was Monday.

Well, enough of that nonsense, must get back to the real world and get this blog off to you.

The highlight of last week was Fiano’s victory in the ‘Calambur’.  Just to explain, the Commune di Certaldo is divided into five ‘villages’ so to speak and all have their own flag.  These are really districts and every member of the commune belongs to one of them.  Fiano is the main village in ‘Le Fonti’ and the team was made up of many friends and family from Fiano, our local village.  ‘So what’s it all about?’ you ask.  Well the teams compete against each other in a complicated day of races, obstacle courses and intelligence tests, hoping to win the coveted Victory Banner.  Well, guess what, our team won and the beautiful banner has been on display in La Dispensa, our still fairly new bar and alimentare, in Fiano.  It really is a beautiful thing and I have enclosed a foto for you to see.  Wow!

The anticipated olive production. La Nazione

The anticipated olive production.
La Nazione

Well, what next?  Oh yes, the olive harvest.  The grape harvest has been going full pelt since the beginning of September and is the busiest time of year for the country folk.  Then it’s the turn of the olives and the countryside changes once again as multi-coloured nets are spread around the olive groves.  Sadly, I read in the paper that the production is estimated at 30% down on last year due to the pesky olive fly.  So the price of Extra Virgin will likely be higher in the coming months.  Whilst we love freshly cold pressed oil, we still have a huge demijohn from last year in the cantina, so we won’t go short.

Meanwhile, down in Rome, there has been a big debate about whether the City should host the 2024 Olympic games.  Now I am a great one for sport, but when I read the announcement from the Mayor of Rome, Virginia Reggi, that the city was withdrawing from the race, I was quietly pleased.  The locals all talk about the lack of money spent on long-term employment, pensioners and the country’s infrastructure.  So good for Virginia and the Romans, lets see some government reaction and some more money put into the economy!

Autumn Italian Fashion, beautiful. La Repubblica.

Autumn Italian Fashion, beautiful. La Repubblica.

Anyway, back to my world and fashion.  Yes I know, I’m a great lover of handbags, scarves, shoes and gloves and this time of year it’s all about autumn colours too.

Then of course, we have the wonderful sunsets as the sun has slipped lower in the sky, or has the planet moved up a shade?  Probably the latter. I sat out on the lower terrace yesterday evening and not one mosquito!  So the imminent arrival of house guests will be pleased to hear that.  August and most of September kept us inside in the evenings to avoid getting bitten, so we’re looking forward to enjoying aperitivi outside.

OK, enough of that.  Must crack on with the day job and the thousand words a day for my third book in the Joanna Wilde trilogy, which I know you are desperate to read!

Have a great week.

Ciao e Benvenuti to all My Friends around the World,

Well, you will no doubt have heard of the Slow Food Movement in Italy, it’s all about cooking and eating slowly and actually enjoying the experience.  This allows time for conversation and good wine whilst anticipating the delights of the food to come.  The Italians have no problem with this, they like to talk a lot about good food, as well as eat it.  You should try it….

Slow Travel Fest, La Repubblica

Slow Travel Fest, La Repubblica

I am delighted to tell you that Tuscany will also be celebrating the Slow Travel Fest between 23rd and 25th of September.  What does this mean? You ask.  Well, big crowds of people will be travelling very slowly on foot, to enjoy the Tuscan countryside and the delights therein.  The long walks starting around nine in the morning, gently visit places of cultural interest as well as vineyards in and around the Monteriggione region near Siena.  To me this is the ultimate way to see this beautiful land, which we are lucky enough to call our home.  Driving around the hills of Chianti is nice enough, but you can only see the real countryside if you get out and walk.  A piede!

Meanwhile, over coffee with my man in Fiano, I read that The Who have just had a hugely successful concert here, whilst celebrating fifty years in rock!  Two of the original members were in the band including the all important lead singer Roger Daltry and guitar man Pete Townsend.  The guys are looking pretty good and the music was apparently spot on.  I also note that Earth, Wind & Fire are touring, as will Bob Dylan and Paul McCartney in the near future.  Great stuff!

Now an Italian friend, who is a great rock fan, asked me why I always promote rock bands from outside of Italy.  Well, I think that is obvious, however, I have not mentioned a great Italian performer before, who does deserve a mention.  He is known as ‘Zucchero’ and actually does make good music with his gravelly voice and excellent band.  There, that should make my friend happy, you know who you are!

And, on the continued subject of aging rockers, I was pleased to find an article in a glossy magazine at the hairdressers announcing the start of a new series on channel 5 in the Autumn called Amiche in Arena.  It will star two great female performers Fiorella Mannoia (62) and Loredana Berte (65) both looking absolutely fabulous!  The concert will raise awareness of the violence against women, so a good cause too.  Rock on!

Now, I know you understand my need to talk about fashion, particularly you girlies, and hopefully some of you men too.  It’s time to change my handbag for an orange one, which will go perfectly with the autumn colours that suit me so well.  No it’s not another new one, it’s been carefully packed away in the wardrobe all summer.  And, here it is!  Send me a pic or your current handbag!

Anyway, it’s time to think about sunday lunch.  Borgo Antico and Osteria Casa Chianti are full, so we are popping back to C’era una Volta in Lucardo for some Tipica Toscana food, cooked and eaten slowly of course.

Have a great week and do drop me a line.

Many of you will already be aware that our darling Farty Barty the cat, was gently put to sleep last Friday morning after his kidneys had failed.  This all came about very fast and I write this with a heavy heart.  The little lad now has a lovely spot in our garden underneath the climbing Jasmin.  But he will always be remembered as the little wild thing who arrived at our door eight years ago and stayed.  Amazingly, on Saturday morning as I sat sadly drinking coffee in Bar Solferino, I found myself inspired to write and managed a whole chapter of ‘The Italian Connection’ which includes Barty.  So he is now immortalised as an important loveable character in my current book.

Now, it’s very easy to go into a miserable state at times like this, but living here in our little bit of Chianti amongst all our lovely Italian friends, it seems somehow easier to go out for morning coffee and meet and greet everyone.  So on Sunday morning I returned to Fiano and the new ‘La Dispensa’ caffè bar and alimentare.  I was delighted to find it busy and bustling with shoppers in for their bread and sunday joint, whilst chatting with friends over coffee.   The local character Alessandro was there too, we previously nicknamed him Signore Rotund for obvious reasons, and he enthusiastically shook my hand our not having seen each other for over six months.  So the life is back in the village and has a centre for everyone to go.  I watched and smiled at the comings and goings from the far end of a long wooden table, and caught up with the local news in the paper.

Fancy Dress in Empoli. La Nazione.

Fancy Dress in Empoli. La Nazione.

Meanwhile, the weekend was busy with Festas as it is the official start of the holiday season.  In Empoli, a local town, the Festa attracts hundreds of locals and visitors alike, who adore parading around in fancy dress.  However, this also means that sixty percent of small businesses including restaurants are now likely to be closed until the end of August, whilst the italians head off for the coast or the mountains to escape the heat!  Typically, I could not buy any credit for my phone at the usual place and had to drive to another tobbacchi to get some!  But hey ho, we prepare for this, the tourists do not and wander around like lost souls in a ghost town.

Well, I hope you will excuse me.  I want to stroll around the garden with a glass of wine after heavy overnight rain, breath in the heavenly smell of the damp grass and plants, and visit Barty.

Have a great week.

Hurrah, at last, our local village of Fiano has a new Cafe Bar and Alimentare after more than six months without being able to buy a coffee!  It is now called ‘La Dispensa’ which translates to larder or pantry. The Local butcher and his wife have completely refurbished the old one and yes, they have a meat counter, but you can also buy everything else you might need like fruit, veg, bread, cheese, milk, wines, beers, and frozen stuff.  Oh, yes and there is a bar for that all important coffee or aperitivo manned by their lovely daughter and they told me this morning that papers will be available to read from Tuesday!  They will be open every day, but not Sunday Evenings.  Well, thank god for that, Fiano at last has a heart again.

Colourful pictures of La Mercantia. La Nazione.

Meanwhile, down in Certaldo the Mercantia has been going at full swing and cars were piling into the town on Saturday evening.  To avoid this massive influx of Italians and tourists, we drove in the opposite direction for supper at C’era una Volta, or ‘Paolo’s’ as the locals call it.  Go to http://www.ristorante-ceraunavolta.com  But even there, the new tourist arrivals were piling in even at nine-thirty in the evening, when we were leaving.  Saturday is arrivals day for most hotels, villas and Agriturismi in the area and in reality, we should have stayed home!  But we met some very nice Americans who obviously enjoy the good life, ordering the popular Bistecca (beefsteak) and all the trimmings.  If you guys are reading this, hope you all have a great holiday.

Well, we are three and a half months into our new home and it feels like we have been here forever; it’s so perfect.  But up until last Friday it was so hot and humid, it was difficult to know which doors and windows, if any, to leave open to try to get some breeze.  But thankfully, Friday it rained, not a lot and the humidity broke, so the new tourists will be enjoying themselves in lower temperatures of around 26 degrees centigrade instead of 35.  However, come tomorrow the temperature will start rising again!  But we don’t care about that, life eeez good, life eeez now!

Last Friday night we went back to L’Osteria Casa Chianti, also packed with both tourists and locals, so it’s essential you book a table there.  http://www.osteriadicasachianti.it  There was a fabulous sunset that night and when the owner, Massimiliano, called the diners out of the upstairs restaurant to a balcony, chairs scraped and people fell over themselves in the rush to get photos.  You would think that a UFO had landing or something!  Unbelievable!  OK, I guess we do take these things rather for granted being residents, but nevertheless!  My man of course, thought the whole thing hilarious.  I must have grumbled too loudly as he looked at me questionably and with a frown on his face.  “Am I embarrassing you?”  I asked.  “How could you do that, I’m sat at another table!”  He roared with laughter….  Oh very funny.  (I still love him)

So how is poor old Silvio doing?  Well, he came out of hospital last Tuesday, looking very tired and older, and is now convalescing.  We wish him well.  It also seems that he is now finally selling his ownership if AC Milan football club to Chinese buyers despite his earlier misgivings.  His already inflated bank account will increase by 400M Euros over the next two years.  “I’m selling the club to people who can bring it back to where it belongs”  He said.  Ah, Thats OK then.

Well, time to think about Sunday lunch.

Wishing you all a happy and relaxed week and we’ll speak again soon.

Salute June x

As most of you know, the Italians love an excuse for a Festa.  This usually means another day off work or a weekend of celebration.  Well, last weekend in Certaldo, we celebrated that great crusty all important daily food, Pane or bread to you and me.  Now, in reality, my being a little dense at times, the celebration may have been about wheat, rather than bread, but in any case there was a wonderful exhibition put on by local schoolchildren of just about anything made out of bread and wheat/corn.  I found poor Pinocchio laid out looking rather morto, but he was beautifully made, as were lots of other creations big and small.  Our granddaughter bumped into a school friend who was all dressed up like a baker.

And, talking about our granddaughter, she came to stay for one night and we were really pleased to have her company.  She went for a walk with granddad and two carrots, to visit our local donkey and goat who live together at Villa Bacio.  She decided that the very friendly donkey was called Jeffery, so that’s what we will call him from now on.

Earlier in the week, my man called me from the bathroom shouting “Come here quick, we’ve got a Hoopoe!”  Well, would you believe it, a young Hoopoe had fallen in love with its reflection in the window and was leaping around in ecstasy!  Now, my man also managed to film the whole thing, so I popped it on YouTube and you can watch it at https://youtu.be/8IN6i-0ME_M  It really is an amazing bit of film!  National Geographic, eat your heart out!

Oh, yes, the news from Fiano our local village is that the new owners of the alimentare/bar are about to open as is the Bar in the piazzetta.  We drove over yesterday and saw the piazza set up for the evening celebrations with tables and chairs, and were told it was all imminent!  So fingers crossed for next weekend.  Also news that the abandoned hotel and restaurant, Il Palchetto, just outside the village has new owners and will reopen in July.  So things are looking up!  We do like a bit of sophisticated dining from time to time.

And finally, here is a picture of the bottom of my man’s wine glass.  Yes we love a nice glass of Chianti, and this picture says it all!
